choral program.jpg

Edge Hill State School has one of the strongest choral programs in Cairns and North Queensland. Our senior choirs participate in competitions in semester one and all choirs (including the junior choir) have performances throughout the school year.

Our choral program is open to all students in Years 1 to 6, and focusses on musicianship, singing and choral techniques, as well as aiding the development of important life skills. These all contribute to our overall standard and are the criteria by which we are adjudicated in local eisteddfod and state-wide competitions

COMPETITIONS
Semester one is competition season for our senior choirs only. Competition gives staff and students incentive and motivation to strive for their best, it improves teamwork, broadens musical tastes and repertoire, and strengthens sense of community. All competitions have rules stating how many students can be in a choir, Therefore, we have two senior choirs in semester one so that all students who would like to be a part of choir, get an opportunity to do so; no one misses out.
Cairns & District Junior Eisteddfod:
Our senior choirs, Edge Hill Bel Canto Choir and Edge Hill Dolce Canto Choir, both compete in the Cairns and District Junior Eisteddfod in semester one of each year. These choirs combine in semester two and become the Edge Hill Senior ChoirChoral Fanfare:
Choral Fanfare is a state-wide competition that happens every two years. The next Choral Fanfare will be in 2025.

2024 CHORAL GROUPS
EDGE HILL CHOIRS 2024
Senior choir is open to all students in Years 3 – 6 and we encourage interested students to come and try two rehearsals if they are undecided. In semester one, there are two senior choirs; Bel Canto and Dolce Canto. The ‘make-up’ of each of these choirs will be decided by the teachers early in Term 1 and these lists will be displayed on the M block music room windows for students to see.

The Piccolo Choir is open to all students in Years 1 & 2. The Piccolo choir perform at school events, and it is a great way for students to participate and experience choral singing without the pressure of competition.

The Crescendudes is a boys only vocal ensemble and is open to all male students in Yrs 3 – 6. The Crescendudes will start rehearsals in semester two. Please note: Students can choose to be in this choir only or in this choir AND the senior choir.

REHEARSALS
When deciding choir rehearsal days and times, there are multiple considerations taken by the Music Department and these days and times are nearly impossible to change once decided, as it is done in consultation with, and in consideration of, multiple parties. Commitment to rehearsals and the 'team’ is imperative for a cohesive group. Attendance is closely monitored in all choirs and students are made aware of the importance of their role in the choir and the impact absences have on the team.
2024 REHEARSAL DAYS:
Bel Canto – Wednesday 7:45 – 8:45 am
Dolce Canto – Wednesday 3:15 – 4:15pm
Piccolo Choir – Monday 8:10 – 8:40 am
